Despite what people might say, there’s no real right or wrong way to travel. If you’ve had a good time and haven’t left things worse for other people, congratulations, you’ve travelled correctly. Saying this, when you’re planning your trip to Europe, there are a few choices that you might consider to really get the most out of it.
A lot of people go to the same places, take the same pictures, and hopefully, all have a wonderful time. But if you’re looking for a more unique taste of Europe, read on for a few tips.
Take Your Time
One of the most important things you can do is to slow down. Often, when people visit another country or, if you’re from the US, another continent, the temptation is to pack as much in your time as possible. There are plenty of good reasons to do this. This might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so you want to miss out on as little as possible.
But Europe is old and packed with interesting things to see and do. If you run around trying to see everything, you might end up missing out on a lot.
Consider spending an extra day or two in an area and slowing down. You can do the touristy things and get the photo opportunities, but you can also do smaller things like explore little towns and villages. For example, if you’re in Greece, spend a bit of time exploring some of the lesser-known and stunning islands along the coast.
Listen to the Locals
If you do decide to slow down and plan a couple of free days in your trip, this gives you the perfect opportunity to talk to the locals. People like to show off about their home, and if you ask and are willing to listen, they might tell you about experiences that you can try.
Ask for recommendations for places to eat, drink, explore, or just exist. You might end up falling in love in a way you didn’t think you could.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should treat everyone like your personal tour guide. Remember that people are trying to live their lives and might not have time to be interrupted. So respect their time and space, and remember to be polite.
Explore By Water
Another way to make sure your experience is more unique is to travel in a way you might not have thought of. Europe is full of lakes, seas, and rivers, so consider exploring by water.
You can look into river cruises in Europe to get a really interesting view of the countryside and some of the towns and cities built along the river. Some of these cruises also involve a guide who will be able to explain some of the local history. Even better, you can enjoy a bit of luxury as you travel.
This is just another way that you can slow down and make sure you have the opportunity to really soak in a place.
